Before The Hall of Negro Life 

African-American author and cultural critic Ralph Ellison made an extremely perceptive comment about historical memory. "The white American," Ellison noted, "has charged the Negro American with being without past or tradition. This observation regarding black and white Americans' contestation over the meaning of their immutably linked histories should remind us that the necessity for creating a usable past is presupposed by the horrifying prospect of a people not having a past or tradition upon which to build. Unthinkable as that notion was for white Americans, in Ellison's view, it has been equally untenable for their black fellow citizens.
